FUNDACION TECNALIA RESEARCH & INNOVATION (TECNALIA)

TECNALIA is a private, independent, non-profit applied research center of international excellence. Tecnalia is the leading private and independent research and technology organization in Spain employing over 1,400 people (more than 150 of them PhDs). TECNALIA is committed to generate a positive impact on environment and society by means of innovation and technological development in various fields, addressed by 7 business divisions, covering the following sectors: Energy, Industry, Transportation, Construction, Health and ICT.

The Urban Environment and Territorial Sustainability Area of Tecnalia holds a consistent record of projects that have contributed to the development of climate change adaptation strategies at local and regional level. On-going projects include:

  • Dashboards and climate services development for different sectors (land use, infrastructures, energy, forestry), including development of products in the framework of Copernicus Climate Change Service.
  • Impact modelling: Floods and Urban Heat Island.
  • Climate change vulnerability and risk assessment: urban context and critical infrastructures (hydropower generation/ hydroelectric plants).
  • Research and operationalization of adaptation options: characterization, evaluation and prioritization.
  • Comfort Urban Places: Simulation and in-situ measurement of comfort-related variables
  • Criteria and guidelines for comfort improvement with particular focus on nature-based solutions.
  • Definition of criteria for design of adaptation measures by means of simulations and in-situ measurements.
  • Evaluation of the effectiveness of ecosystem-based adaptation by means of different tools (e.g. EnviMet, Bayesian Belief Networks, Multi-criteria Assessment)

Tecnalia supports public administrations in decision making for regional planning (e.g. definition and implementation of a regional reference framework for the integration of criteria for adaptation to climate change effects at local scale within the Basque Country), local planning (e.g. elaboration of roadmaps for the design and implementation of local/municipal climate change adaptation plans in Vitoria, Bilbao, Madrid) and the development of decision support tools for regional and local authorities related to environmental quality and comfort and climate resilience.

Within REACHOUT Tecnalia is responsible for the actual Triple-A toolkit development from functional design to technical implementation and data management
